To spark some inspiration I visited Magculture, based in London. Their belief is that editorial creativity is an ever-developing discipline that continues to adapt to technologies and circumstances. They celebrate historical and contemporary magazines. This was a really fun experience and I even got to purchase some independent magazines to add to my small collection. I often visit their website to look for new magazines and to read their journal.

The masthead is heavily inspired by 1970s bubble writing with a three-dimensional effect. It has been designed to fit with connotations of the word ‘Flourish’ by creating flowing strokes in each letter. The ‘F’ acts as part of the brand and will be a symbol that the audience can easily recognise. The use of multiple colours is important and is used for each issue because the masthead must stand out on every cover. It should also draw the reader into the magazine when it is sat on a shelf or coffee table. The two colours behind changes depending on the cover image and is then used through the issue. The Masthead is not overly floral which is deliberate so that it does not look too gender stereotypical.

I wanted to create something to go at the front of each issue of the magazine to add a personal touch. I chose to design a postcard and a sticker sheet. The stickers can be used to name houseplants, as well as any additional information such as how to care for it.

The colours in the masthead change based on the season the issue is published in. Autumn/Winter has darker ‘wintery’ colours and Spring/Summer has brighter colours to distinguish between the seasons. The colours will also depend on the nature of the cover image because certain colours may get lost and it is important that the masthead stands out. A spot varnish will be added to the masthead to ensure it stands out from the full bleed image on the cover. The magazine has been designed to be published bi-annually.

Part of the brief was to design an online presence for the magazine. I chose to create both an Instagram page and website, with a space for blog posts, subscription and a shop.
I created a range of merchandise that fitted with the feel of the website. There postcards would be included in the first and second issues of Flourish and the notebook would be available to purchase on the website.
