DK: Eyewitness Encyclopedia of Everything!

I was lucky enough to work on Eyewitness Encyclopedia of Everything for the majority of last year. This is a 400 page book. I worked on it from R&D stages to production, which allowed me to develop lots of skills, mainly in template design. My role was to work closely with senior team members on the project to produce an extra spread type that would work alongside the main spreads. Like the hugely successful Eyewitness series itself, Eyewitness Encyclopedia of Everything includes every topic children want to read about. The world's greatest record-breakers, most amazing animals, inspiring history-makers, and cutting-edge technology are all here, in one utterly unputdownable kid's encyclopedia. Each page is illustrated with jaw-dropping photography and filled with facts and images that are ideal for children aged 9+.

These thumbnails show experimentation with different typefaces for our main spread type. Within these I also experimented with different point sizes and leading. Below shows the finished spread.

Once everyone was happy with the spread layout I created a master template to send to the team. I also created a marked-up PDF to explain specific design elements. This was important as we had a large team of editors and designers working on this book and it therefore ensured each spread stayed consistent.

Again, these show different design experiments for our quiz spread, which was renamed as 'name that...'
